Hello. I am Hugh D. Durrence, RPh, MD. CPI and I am a Registered Pharmacist, Board Certified Family Physician, and Certified Physician Investigator working in private practice in Charleston, South Carolina. I have been a solo practitioner since 1998 after being a pharmacist for the previous eleven years. I enjoy the autonomy and independence of having my own practice.
In addition to my private practice, I have hospital privileges at Roper Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, East Cooper Regional Medical Center, Trident Regional Medical Center and MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina.
I graduated from Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I attended and graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Then, I graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with a Doctor of Medicine degree. I have served as an Associate Clinical Professor – Department of Family Practice, MUSC.
I am licensed to practice medicine in the State of South Carolina and board certified by the American Board of Family Physicians. I regularly attend continuing education programs in areas of interest relevant to my practice. I am a member of a number of professional groups, including the American Academy of Family Physicians in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, the South Carolina of Medical Association and the American Medical Association. I am President of the SC Academy of Family Physicians, President of Liberty Doctors, LLC, Chairman of United Physicians, ACO, Chairman of the Board at Roper hospital. A member of the American Academy Family Practice, Charleston County Medical Society, German Friendly Society, Societe’ Francaise Humanitati Exchange Club of Charleston, Member ACRP; Certified as Primary Investigator, Board Member Medical Society of South Carolina, and the Association of Physicians and Surgeons.
My combination of my formal education as a pharmacist and as a family physician and my interest in independent research clinical trials has shaped my views on the practice of medicine. I believe in and practice traditional medicine but am also open-minded to alternative options. Pharmacorp Clinical Trials, Inc. is an independent clinical research site within my family medicine practice operated by us since 2006. Pharmacorp and I offer comprehensive medical and research services. As a Certified Physician Investigator, we have conducted over 80 clinical research trials for over 22 major pharmaceutical sponsors. Research options allow us the liberty to participate in your health, while helping others.
Many of my patients choose to combine both conventional and alternative medicine in their treatment and care. Also, many area midwives coordinate newborn care with my office because of my flexibility and integration of their practices.
My goal is to provide the best possible medical care to my patients in conjunction with their needs and desires, in a warm friendly environment. I do this with open communication in a personal and caring way, which is the only way that I know how to practice medicine. I hope to see you and your family soon.
